Professional marriage counseling, couples therapy, and relationship counseling for couples seeking better communication, clarity and direction

Lenore Powers providing marriage counseling and couples therapy in Scarsdale NY

I’m Lenore Powers. Welcome to My Practice.

I am Lenore Powers and I am a licensed psychotherapist treating adults, children, teens and couples.

We all experience emotional distress at times – it’s all part of the human experience. Yet sometimes our anxiety or feelings of sadness can become so overwhelming, that it leaves us feeling hopeless, isolated or just plain “stuck.” Although our family and friends may be well-meaning, they do not always know how to support us in a healthy way.

As a therapist for over 35 years, I have found that healing starts with understanding your own strengths and internal resources. Feeling good and experiencing personal growth can come from drawing upon these inner qualities in times of need. However, sometimes we can lose sight of our own power and capacity to change difficult situations, which can leave us feeling anxious or depressed.

Whether you’re navigating long‑standing patterns or unexpected challenges, my practice provides a safe, supportive space for growth and lasting connection.

A Different Approach…

Over the years, many clients have come to me saying that they had been in therapy before but were looking for something “different”.  Although their experience had been OK, they still felt a great deal of anxiety and depression between sessions or after their treatment ended.

Clients who had not been in therapy, said they had concerns that it would be “all just talk” with little change. This is not what our work together will be like.

Our time will be focused on helping you discover your inner resources, and then learning the concrete, practical copings skills that will empower you to make the meaningful and lasting positive changes that you are seeking.

You won’t find cookie‑cutter therapy here. Our work together  is rooted in proven strategies — including strengths‑based, solution‑focused methods — that help couples discover new patterns of connection and communication.

A Plan Just For You…

It will be important for us to explore your personal history, traumas or current problems, but that will only part of our work together. In a safe, supportive and compassionate setting, we will discuss your past struggles and identify how these experiences have impacted you today.

We will identify any negative “self-talk” or unhealthy patterns of behavior, then work towards removing those obstacles that are preventing you from feeling more at peace and happy in your life.

I draw upon my education, including two master’s degrees in clinical mental health as well as advanced training in proven therapeutic methods such as CBT, DBT, ACT and Trauma Systems, and share strategies which are most effective for your unique needs.

I believe that you are your own best expert and together, we will work towards helping you to identify, create and maintain the kind of life you want to live – your best life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Relationships don’t come with a user manual, so it’s completely normal to have questions before starting marriage counseling or couples therapy.

Whether you’re wondering how the process works, how long it takes, or if your situation “really counts,” you’re not alone—these are the same questions couples from my Westchester area ask every day.

Here, you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about couples counseling, marriage counseling, and relationship therapy, all answered in a straightforward, judgment-free way so you can decide what feels right for you and your relationship.

In practice, couples therapy and marriage counseling are very similar — both focus on helping two people improve their relationship. The difference is usually in the focus and stage of the relationship.

  • Couples therapy often looks more deeply at patterns, past experiences, and emotional dynamics between partners. We explore how each of you shows up in the relationship, where you get stuck, and how to create new ways of relating.
  • Marriage counseling is often more present-focused and solution-oriented. Many married couples come in wanting support with specific challenges: communication, trust, conflict, parenting, intimacy, or feeling disconnected.

At Lenore Empowers in Westchester County, NY, I blend both approaches. Whether you’re dating, engaged, or married, we’ll work together using marriage and relationship counseling tools that fit your unique situation. Labels matter less than this question: What kind of relationship do you want to build together, and how can I help you get there?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer (sorry, I know that would be easier!), but I can give you a general idea.

Many couples start to notice meaningful shifts in 8–12 sessions when they’re actively engaged in the process and practicing new skills between appointments. Some come for a shorter period to work through a specific issue, while others choose longer-term couples therapy or marital relationship counseling to support ongoing growth.

We’ll discuss your goals early on so you have a clear sense of what we’re working toward. From there, we’ll periodically check in about progress and decide together how long to continue. My role isn’t to keep you in therapy forever — it’s to help you create a relationship that feels more connected, honest, and sustainable.

Yes — I offer both in-person and online sessions for couples.

In-person: Sessions are held in my comfortable office, conveniently located for couples throughout Westchester County.

Online (telehealth): For couples who prefer the convenience of meeting from home or have busy schedules, I offer secure video sessions for marriage counseling, couples therapy, and relationship counseling.

Some couples start online and later move to in-person, and others stick with one format. We can talk about what works best for your schedules, comfort level, and the type of work we’re doing together.

Whichever format you choose, the goal is the same: a safe, supportive space where both partners feel heard, respected, and actively involved in the process.

Marriage counseling and couples therapy can support you through a wide range of challenges, from “quiet disconnection” to major relationship crises.

Some of the most common reasons couples come to see me in Westchester, NY include:

  • Frequent arguments or tension that never really gets resolved
  • Feeling more like roommates than partners
  • Broken trust, including emotional or physical affairs
  • Differences in parenting, money, or life priorities
  • Changes in intimacy, affection, or emotional closeness
  • Stress from work, family, or health that spills into the relationship

In marriage and relationship counseling, we don’t just talk about problems — we work on building new patterns of communication, understanding, and connection. My role as your relationship therapist is to help both of you feel heard, understood, and supported while we create practical tools you can use at home.

Not at all. While some couples come to marital relationship counseling during a crisis, many seek couples counseling because they want to strengthen what they already have.

Relationship counseling can be helpful if you:

  • Want to improve communication before small issues become big ones
  • Are making a big life transition (marriage, new baby, blended family, retirement)
  • Feel “okay” as a couple, but miss the connection you once had
  • Want a neutral space to talk through recurring disagreements

Think of marriage and couples counseling as support for your relationship’s long-term health — like a check-up, not just an emergency room visit. Couples in Westchester County often tell me they wish they had started sooner, when things were just beginning to feel off rather than deeply painful.
